Over the week end we had a really bad storm. There was thunder and lightning and a bad snow storm over the pass. A flamenco concert had been planned but the weather was so bad that the road was closed due to the snow. Consequently no one was able to get to the performance venue. I was there the day before so I was the only person. We sat around and drank some beer with the performers who later took me back to Granada after the pass was cleared. I never got to hear them nor see the performance. Instead I got even better. All the way back to Granada the singer sang in the back seat of the car. He was a young boy around 17 years old. I’ve rarely heard such a talent in my life. First he sang all the standard Flamenco songs. Then he started making up words to the themes he already knew. I’ve seen singer do this a lot when they have seen a beautiful girl in the audience. It is also an old custom in Spain to whisper into the ear of a woman who walks by a little complement that was invented on the spot. Normally it would be one or two lines of poetry. Then the men would go back to the bar and share the poems they had made up with their friends. This time we heard the piropos in song. The young dancer was in the back seat with the singer so he sang to her all the way back to Granada.
